Nineteenth Century Japanese Actor Prints

Synopsis
The Japanese colour woodblock prints of Kabuki actors from the period 1820-1856 featured on this slide set were published in Edo (modern Tokyo) and Osaka. Most of the prints directly reflect the energy and confidence of a Kabuki that was vigorous, creative and still evolving. They show a variety of characters and scenes popular with the mass audiences of the time.
