New Visions of the Universe

Synopsis
Describes different means of observing the universe from the earth. Describes the universe today, granulation of the sun, magnetic fields, eruptions on the sun and their effects on the earth. Discusses the instruments used in the exploration and observation of the universe: classical optical instruments e.g. the 3.5 metre diameter Franco-Canadian telescope in Hawaii, interference telescopes, photon-counting telescopes, radiowave receivers and recent discoveries in radioastronomy which they have led to - e.g. pulsars, quasars, instruments for the study of hydrogen and ultraviolet radiation. Describes each instrument, the discoveries that each has led to, and a commentary by a researcher who has used the equipment.
