New Sun is Born, A (2 Parts)
- Synopsis
- 1: A study of the Portuguese revolution, first examining events of 1974-76 to set the context for specially recorded personal accounts of the experience of living through a revolutionary period. Presents a brief history of political developments from the declaration of the First Republic in 1910 to the eve of the revolution in April 1974, with eyewitness accounts of key events of the first days of the coup. Ends with democracy in the balance - wil the military junta, committed to installing a democratic regime, be strong enought to resist the might of the commmunist party?
2: Governmental power rested with the moderates and democratic leftists in the provisional government and the military junta, but in the streets the communists prevailed, threatening to install the first West European communist state. There was a constant power struggle, which continued after elections for a Constitutional Assembly in 1975. Cultural and social change accelerated, the position of women changed, farm labourers occupied deserted farms, workers’ committees helped to run factories, and cultural life was liberated from years of censorship. A leftist coup failed in November 1975 and the moderates’ position was confirmed when a general election returned a Socialist government. Eyewitnesses conclude that the current democracy in Portugal is not what they fought for. - Series
