Nerve Biophysical Tutorials
- Synopsis
- An interactive computer tutorial package for teaching the principles of nerve biophysics and based on a series of well-documented experiments on the squid giant axon preparation, which illustrate some of the important biophysical principles of nerve function. Examines the resting potential (factors influencing the movement of ions across membranes, ion channels, diffusion potentials, use of the Nernst and Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equations to model the resting membrane potential), the action potential (changes in membrane conductance that give rise to the action potential, phases of the action potential, threshold of excitation, refractory period), and propagation of the action potential (local circuit theory, saltatory conduction, factors affecting conduction velocity, e.g. axon diameter, myelination).
