Nenthead Lead Mines
- Synopsis
- Looks at old mineshafts in the area around Nenthead in Cumbria. Shows surface views of buildings and the smelt mill wheelpit, and then goes underground.to show an underground horse-whim chamber, various ‘flats’ where the lead and zinc ore has been removed, and Ballroom Flat, where a candlelit celebration dinner was held in 1901. Also shows some of the dry-stone arching in the levels, wooden doors and plastered walls to help ventilation, and wooden ore chutes feeding the level from flats above. Explores Rampgill horse level to show Brewery shaft with its complex hydraulic pipework and an underground horse-whim drum. A brief visit to Capleclough level includes views of some unusual formations.
