Nazis: A Warning from History, The
- Synopsis
- Series exploring how the Nazis came to power, how they ruled, how theey trated their occupied territories and also, how a cultured nation could be responsible for such horrendous acts upon humanity. In six parts on two videocassettes.
Video 1: 1) Helped into Power: from the aftermath of World War 1 to Hitler’s elevation to the post of Chancellor in 1933; 2) Chaos and Consent: the Nazi Rule of Germany: covers the period from 1933 to the eve of World War 2. Although Nazi displays of military prowess gave the image of an ordered, disciplined society, archive film and interviews reveal an administration characterised by disorder and chaos, emanating from Hitler himself. 3) The Wrong War: Hitler’s attempts to court the British in the 1930s failed and a non-agression pact with Russia opened the way for the German invasion of Poland.
Video 2: 4) The Wild East: the Nazi reign of terror in Poland, characterised by upheaval, chaos, petty bickering, policy differences and blood lust; 5) The Road to Treblinka: the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, showing how it proved to be the catalyst for a radical change in Nazi policy against the Jews. Filmed in Poland, Germany and Lithuania; 6) Fighting to the End: asks why the Germans fount on long after any chance of winning the war had past. Includes contributions from Hitler’s staff officers, a victim of Soviet atrocities and an Auchwitz survivor. - Language
