Nature’s Technology
- Synopsis
- Investigates the natural engineering solutions developed by creatures in the world of nature to deal with problems caused by their environments and at ways man copies nature’s technology. By observing creatures of anatomically different make-ups, it is possible to analyse the mechanics of their movements and then produce biologically-based machines of surprising performance. Examines the acrobatics of the monkey, the gait of the ostrich, the two-legged leap of the kangaroo, the elephant’s trunk, the snake. Deomonstrates the mechanical Utah hand powered by compressed air and relying on nylon tendons for remarkably precise movements. Shows walking machines including a two-legged robot that can climb stairs and a monopod that can leap in any direction. The more advanced robots react to video camera eyes, sensors in the mechanical limbs an computers that interpret information.
