Namekas: Music in Lake Chambri
- Synopsis
- Shows the people of three villages on an island in Lake Chambri, adjacent to the Sepik river. Featured are the men’s sacred paired flutes, flute ensembles, slit drums and voice masks, which all have spiritual connotations. Other instruments seen are the hourglass-shaped drum, bamboo jew’s harp, a panpipe used in mourning, and the unusual use of a sago beetle to produce a melody. The slit drum is also used to ‘telegraph’ messages.
