Muscle Physiology

Synopsis
Simulates a number of simple experiments which can be performed to illustrate the physiological properties of skeletal muscle and neuromuscular transmissions and is modelled on the frog sciatic nerve-gastrocnemius preparation. It provides an alternative to the use of live animals in techniques. The program is menu-driven and simulates muscle contraction and compound nerve action potentials with high resolution graphics displays. These are produced on a graticulated screen from which students can take measurements, as they would from an oscilloscope screen. Each experiment is prefaced by introductory text, and instructions and student assignments are included. Experiments include stimulus-voltage response, summation, tetanus muscle length-tension relationships, and effect of curare.
