Multicultural Education: The Oldham Experience
- Synopsis
- The multicultural and anti-racist policy of one authority is shown at various junior and infant schools. Oldham’s written policy is one page long. It states that the diverse ethnic origins of the Oldham population requires a positive response on the part of Oldham’s schools. The idea of an homogeneous British society is no longer acceptable as a base for action. Britain is a multicultural society, and education policies must reflect this. Racism is not mentioned by name in the authority’s written statement, but the eradication of racism is one of its aims. The policy applies equally to all schools in the Oldham area, and sequences from all-white schools are included. It is now generally understood, at least in Oldham, that racism is perhaps a problem for whites even more than it is for blacks, and it is a problem that only they can solve.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
