Mu120 Videocassette 1

Synopsis
Support video for course MU120 - a compilation of six programmes.
1: Advises students on the effective use of video-based course materials.
2: Shows how, since World War 2, the situation of women who go out to work has changed and discusses how statements about women’s and mens earnings might be investigated.
3: Making sense of patterns: looks at clusters in data to ask whether they have statistical significance or whether they represent chance groupings.
4 (21 min): Looks at the bird count held each summer on Skomer island. The bird numbers are very great and it is important to use a reliable system.
5 (27 min): Provides a visual experience to assist students in map reading. Looks behind the scenes at the Ordnance Survey (OS) headquarters to show some of the complexities involved in translating survey data into printed and electronic maps. Three walkers follow the Mam Tor-Lose Hill walk; ground views, aerial footage and OS three-dimensional digital mapping are used to explain questions of gradient, contour lines, saddle points, bearings, and global positioning by satellite.
6 (24 min): Looks at the timetabling of the Severn Valley Railway, much of which is single-track. The service requires mathematical techniques that rely on drawing and interpreting position-time graphs.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
