Mozambique Under Attack

Synopsis
In 1981 the government of Mozambique stressed development that benefited the majority and not just the elite. The expanding health service won praise world-wide, and the economy was growing. Mozambique even turned away aid that had unacceptable strings attached. But by 1991 Mozambique has become the poorest and most aid-dependent country in the world and was forced to accept aid on the West’s conditions. A million of the country’s people died during the war, and a third of all health care clinics were destroyed; World Bank/IMF-imposed spending limits meant that the country has been forced to rely on aid to rebuild them. The children living on the streets are a symbol of the World Bank’s Structural Adjustment Programme. The film discusses how these economic politics and the war affecting the people of Mozambique and what hopes they have for the future.
