Moving on
- Synopsis
- Three 8-minute films: 1) AIRPORT: A new wave of hostile nationalism is driving ethnic Germans from Kazakhstan, where they have lived for over 100 years. This film shows German families departing for Germany from Kyasanoi airport and discusses the gaping hole in the economy they will leave behind. 2) VILLAGE IN THE SKY: Looks at a Belorussian community evacuated from their village after the Chernobyl explosion and re-housed in an apartment block in Minsk. Twelve years on, the residents have recreated their old peasant lifestyle, with blackmarket kulaks, vodka casualties, and vegetable gardens on the balconies of their new high-rise ‘village in the sky’. 3) BANDITS AND BRIC-A-BRAC: Follows a Latvian bus driver on his regular run between Riga and Vilnius in Lithuania, where the passengers buy western European luxury goods smuggled through Poland to be sold in Riga for a profit, but the journey is fraught with danger.
