Moving into Residential Care

Synopsis
Highlights the emotional and social implications for the elderly person moving into residential care. The rights and wishes of the old person should be central to the decision taking, but are they always taken into account?. A number of old people currently in care talk briefly about the circumstances concerning their own admission, showing that in some cases they were under pressure from their relatives or their GP to move into care. The role of the social worker is discussed, guidelines are given for the social worker’s involvement, and a role-play demonstrates how the worker might talk with an old person about the difficulties of continuing to cope in her own home.
