Moral Development

Synopsis: Re-creates Dr Stanley Milgram’s classic obedience experiment in which one participant is required to adminster what he believes to be high-voltage electric shocks to the other. Dr David Rosenhan examines the influence of social and environmental factors on moral reasoning and explains how external factors such as the presence of an authority figure can govern the outcome of a situation. Contrast Dr Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory on moral development, stating that everyone develops morality in consistent and unchanging ways and that behaviour is determined by the state of moral development reached, with social learning theory, exemplified by the Milgram study.
