Monoclonal Antibodies
- Synopsis
- Describes how lymphocytes in the bloodstream of an animal will respond to the appearance of an antigen by producing antibodies to it. Explains the difference between monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. Discusses why a method of producing antibodies in the laboratory had to be developed before a reliable supply of standard antibody could be obtained for commercial or medical use. Describes and demonstrates the technique of fusing lymphocytes with cancer cells to produce a hybrid that can survive and produce antibodes ‘in vitro’. In the laboratory lymphocytes from the spleens of immunised mice are fused with mouse myeloma cells to produce hybridomas that can be used as a source of antibody to to antigen with which the mice were immunised.
