Monetarism and Coal

Synopsis
Examines the economic theory of monetarism looking at its application to the nationalised coal industry. Contains extracts from a 1976 ‘Newsday’ interview with Professor Milton Friedman. How his ideas on inflation, union power and the nationalised industries became a prescription for public policy under the Conservative Party from the late 1970s is illustrated with archive film of Sir Keith Joseph and Sir Geoffrey Howe. Huw Benyon, Durham University, explains what this new monetarist philosophy meant for the coal industry and why conflict between miners and government became almost inevitable after the 1979 elections. Interviews with Nigel Lawson and Norman Tebbit during the miners’ 1984-85 strike show the Conservative government’s thinking at the time.

At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
