Molecular Basis of Narcosis, The

Synopsis
General anaesthesia can be induced by a wide range of gases and volatile compounds. Presents evidence for and against the microhydrate theories. However, the superior correlation of the potencies of general anaesthetics with their lipid solubilities suggests a hydrophobic site of action, either in the membrane lipids or in specific areas of macromolecules such as proteins. This has been investigated using temperature and pressure effects. The concept of multiple sites of action with different selectivity for different agents is discussed.
