Atmospheric Convection and Simulation
- Synopsis
- Nature of convection in the atmosphere (time-lapse of cumulus over sun-heated mountains) and in the laboratory (tank demonstration). Description of ‘meteotron’ and shots of experiments in 1978-79 to examine properties of resulting thermal plume. Accounts of instrumentation - radar, all-sky photography, photogrammetry, lidar and aircraft sampling for water, particles and sodium dioxide. Examples of results including bifurcation of plume, effects of vertical shear and stability, modification of natural cumulus and clearance of strato-cumulus in a ring when penetrated by plume. Brief shots of cumulus over industrial complexes.
