Michael Powell with Chris Peachment
- Synopsis
- Michael Powell is interviewed by Chris Peachment, film editor and critic for ‘Time Out’. The occasion is the publication of Powell’s autobiography which takes him up to 1947, ‘A Life in the Movies’. He discusses his friendship with Emeric Pressburger, which began at a script conference with Alexander Korda, and the formation of their distinctive trademark ‘The Archers’. Powell talks of how he started in films. He touches upon the work of the recently ‘rediscovered’ Bernard Vorhaus and his meeting with Alfred Hitchcock. Several of Powell’s famous films are discussed including THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP, BLACK NARCISSUS, and THE RED SHOES, from which a 5-minute ballet sequence is shown. Some of his other films are also discussed. The programme is not an academic debate and does not thoroughly examine his work.
