Synopsis
Series tracing the historical and technological evolution of six typical components of a modern city. Uses graphics, video effects and dramatic re-creation to revealt he hidden mechanisms that enable the modern metropolis to function.
1 (producer Bryn Higgins): The emergence of high-rise buildings.
2 (producer Bryn Higgins): Prison governor Dr David Wilson examines the use of closed-circuit security cameras in cities such as Los Angeles, London and Newcastle upon Tyne, and discusses the hidden dangers in the rapid rise of mass surveillance.
3 (producer Frank Prendergast): A history of the water closet and looks at the Victorian sewerage system built beneath London.
