Methodology: The Psychologist and the Experiment

Synopsis
Looks at the basic rules or methods common to all psychological research, using the actual documentation of two different experiments. Includes Dr Stanley Schachter’s ‘fear and affiliation’ social psychology experiment using human subjects and Dr Austin Riessen’s experiment on the development of visual motor coordination using kittens as subjects. Examines the generation of an experimental hypothesis, independent manipulation of conditions, random assignment of subjects and experimental controls. Discusses how to interpret findings in relation to hypothesis and considers the replication and generalisation of results.
