At the Caribou Crossing Place

Synopsis
The series shows how life used to be among the Netsilik when they still lived apart and depended on the land and their own ingenuity to sustain life through the rigours of the Artic year. The filming was done in the Pelly Bay region of the Canadian Arctic. In 2 parts: 1 (30 min): Early autumn at an Inuit camp in the Pelly Bay region of the Canadian Arctic. The Eskimos have left the fishing grounds and set up camp at the caribou crossing. A woman wakes and dresses a boy; the boy picks berries and then plays at being a hunter using a slingshot; the woman spreads caribou hide to dry; men return from hunting in kayaks, bringing another caribou; the father makes spinning top for the boy; 2 (29 min): Two men join the four people at camp. The men build a row of ‘inukshuit’, manlike figures which they use to deflect the oncoming caribou into the water, where they are subsequently speared and floated ashore. A great feast follows.
