Meiosis: The Key to Genetic Diversity

Synopsis
In two parts. 1: Stages of Meiosis: Shows each step of meiosis, from prophase I through to telophase II. Explains how meiosis reduces by half the normal diploid number of chromosomes in a cell, to ensure that the normal chromosome count is restored when the male and female sex cells fuse during fertilisation. 2: Sexual Reproduction, Meiosis and Diversity: Explains why genetic diversity is important, describes how the random segregation of chromosomes during meiosis contributes to genetic diversity, and shows how the crossing over of genes between homologous chromosomes results in still more variation.
