Meeting the Man from the Motor Trade

Synopsis
CITY WATCH is a series of six films about Birmingham’s Environmental Services Department. Each film follows an individual or a group of environmental health officers and other officials on a ‘typical’ day as they try to protect the people of Birmingham from diseases, filth, fraud and unscrupulous landlords. They are responsible for food hygiene and infectious diseases, health and safety, environmental protection, coroner’s services, veterinary services, waste disposal, fraud and special investigation, motor vehicle investigation and fair trading. This film looks at the work of trading standards officers, who are empowerd to investigate the second-hand car trade and garages that service cars to make sure the law is complied with and unsafe vehicles do not get on the road. Sometimes they check at random and sometimes as a result of complaints. Shows how the officers go about their tasks, what the law demands and what the customer should look out for.
