Synopsis

World-wide competition has forced Europe to relaunch its industrial policy for the pharmaceutical industry, especially in the research and development sector, which includes biotechnology. The European Commission rethought the marketing authorisiation system and created the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA), which has been responsible for the co-ordination and evaluation of all pharmaceutical products of the European Union since January 1995.
