Aston’s Villas

Synopsis
Traces the development of the township of Aston, built within the old park walls of Aston Hall. When the direct line of the Holte family died out Aston Hall was leased to James Watt Jnr and it was only after his death in 1848 that building took place in the park although by that date several satellite townships had grown up around the perimeter. The reduced park was opened to the public and became a centre for dazzling events while a separate entertainments centre was built in the Lower Grounds, the site of Aston Villa football ground. Aston achieved borough status too late to be able to remain separate from Birmingham for long and now much of it has disappeared beneath th A38 motorway from Spaghetti Junction.
