Matter of Life and Debt, A (3 Parts)

Synopsis
Three programmes on the global debt crisis. Part 1 asks have our personal accounts and savings been put at risk by the lending policies of the banks?
Part 2 looks at the success of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the previous six years in persuading developing countries to become net exporters of capital to the rich creditor, so turning the concept of aid to poor countries on its head. For the last two years Africa alone has made repayments double the amount of foreign aid received.
Part 3 examines the mounting pressure inside debtor countries (Mexico, Brazil, Peru) not to pay their debts. A trillion dollars is owed by the Third World - where has the money gone? Argues that much of it is in the banks which lent it - the money coming back either as interest payments or as capital flight into the accounts of members of the rich Third World elites.
