Mathematics in the Infant/First School (5 Parts)

Synopsis
The series deals with the development of arithmetic in the early years of school education. Extensive use is made of set language and activities. There is emphasis on base 10 and stress on the correct use and control of language. Each programme has a common format - an introduction followed by classroom sequences from various schools. The activities seen are assessed. The series derives from the Nuffield Mathematics Project. Part 1 SORTING - stresses the importance of teaching children for understanding rather than just for technique. Shows a variety of sorting and matching activities in early infant work which is basic to the development of number concepts.
Part 2 INVENTING NUMBER - develops ideas of cardinal numbers through matching activities. The small counting numbers are studied individually, and only later put into their natural sequence. Emphasises ten as a group which will constantly be used.
Part 3 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION - explores approaches to these first two operations of arithmetic, stressing the importance of children’s experience of them coming first, then being talked about, and finally being expressed symbolically. Subtraction is dealt with as ‘the difference between’ rather than as ‘taking away’.
Part 4 MULTIPLICATION - presents ideas for introducing multiplication, such as the representation of a product-set as points on a lattice.
Part 5 DIVISION - considers the partive, measure and repeated subtraction aspects of division, each being developed through its own activity.
