Mathematics and Physics for Anaesthetists. Part 7: Blood Gas Analysis

Synopsis
After revising the definition of pH, the theory of electrode potential is illustrated with reference to a pH meter. The Ag/AgC1 and Calomel electrodes are explained and their applicability to blood pH measurements is examined. The various steps in blood-gas analysis by a fully automatic machine are set out, together with the correct technique and appropriate safety precautions, to ensure reliable and uncontaminated readings. The various electrodes for pH, pCO2 and pO2 are explained and typical calculations for calibration and measurement are illustrated.
