Mathematical Modelling: Populations
- Alternative title
- Population Modelling
- Synopsis
- Introduces the concept of mathematical modelling by applying it to the prediction of the growth of fish stocks in the North Sea. Researchers must first determine the age of fish being caught before attempting to calculate the levels of fish remaining and forecast effects of governmental restrictions. A model for exponential growth is made, including instrumental factors such as mortality, reproduction, decay and predator activity. Such mathematical models enable theories to be tested before implementation, thus minimising the risk of disaster, which in this case would mean a barren North Sea.
