Synopsis
Explains the advantages and disadvantages of serum screening for Down’s syndrome and spina bifida in order to provide couples expecting a baby with sufficient information to decide whether or not to have the test. Introduces people with Down’s syndrome and spina bifida and explains their problems. Looks at the nature of the blood test and the fact that only about two thirds of cases are identified. Demonstrates amniocentesis - the collecting of fluids from around the baby. Emphasises throughout the voluntary nature of the procedure.
