Masters of Light: Dutch Painting from Utrecht in the Golden Age

Synopsis
Introduces 17th-century painting from the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, focusing on works such as the Mannerist history and mythological paintings of Abraham Bloemaert and Joachim Wtewael, the Caravaggesque religious and genre scenes of Hendrick ter Brugghen, Dirck van Baburen and Gerard van Honthorst; and the landscapes of Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Jan Both. The achievements of these and other Utrecht painters are placed within the context of the special religious, political and social character of the city itself.
