Masaccio: A View of Mankind

Alternative title
View of Mankind, A
Synopsis
Masaccio (1401-1428) was among the most innovative Florentine artists of the early Renaissance. His paintings broke from Gothic convention by portraying their human subjects as individuals in a social setting, and this film explores both Masaccio’s short career and the artistic revolution he initiated. In this film Sir Lawrence Gowing demonstrates how Masaccio made one of the great breakthroughs in the history of visual representation - the depiction of the human subject in three-dimensional space.
