Marimba Music of Mexico

Synopsis
Although in Guatemala and in Chiapas the marimba is often played by Indians in the mountains, most Latin-Americans have come to associate the marimba with the music of the mestizos, people of mixed Indian and European origins. Most often marimbas are played by more than one person; for the performance shown in this film there are four men playing on a single instrument covering a range of 5 1/2 octaves. The leader of the group, Nestor Banos, also manufactured the instrument being played. Three ‘sones’ are heard, two from Tabasco and one from Tehuantepec.
