Manet: The Heroism of Modern Life

Synopsis
Examines the commitment of French painter Edouard Manet to painting the history of his own era, which is friend Baudelaire characterised as the ‘heroism of modern life’. Traces the development of Manet’s art during the 1960s and explores ways in which he used painting to comment on his own times. Also analyses many of Manet’s most celebrated works and assesses their debt to Spanish art, especially the paintings of Velazquez.
