Synopsis
Offers social workers a structure for interviewing parents aimed at assessing the degree of handicap, matching this to available services and encouraging parents to begin working on emotional difficulties. A social work student is shown interviewing the parents of a mentally handicapped teenager to illustrate the interview structure. The interview is discussed with a clinical psychologist who suggests alternative perspectives for the social worker to take. Finally, the parents comment on their reactions to the birth of their child. The focus of the tape is on the role of a social worker with a family having a mentally handicapped child.
