Malaria: Battle of the Merozites

Synopsis
Malaria is currently responsible for the deaths of over 300 million people a year worldwide, the highest death rate caused by a parasitic disease. As malarial parasites become increasingly resistant to vaccines the need for an effective treatment is becoming more pressing. This programme looks at the scientific controversy surrounding the claims of Colombian chemist Manuel Patarroyo to have developed an effective vaccine to the disease. Over 20,000 South Americans have already been innoculated with the new vaccine, but many western scientists dispute its efficacy and safety.
