Making of Modern Electronics, The

Synopsis
Band 1: How boules or ingots - single crystals of semiconducting materials - are produced by the silicon industry.
Band 2: Shows the process stages for the BY249 diode, with explanations of some of the problems of production and quality control.
Band 3: Uses animated graphics to describe the processes involved in making a dipolar transistor, an nMOS transistor, and two complementary transistors on the same substrate.
Band 4: Shows how the IC design team at Mullard, Southampton, balance the complex circuitry designs against the cost pressures of volume manufacture.
Band 5: Filmed at the Plessey Research Centre laboratories at Cresswell. Describes the pre-production stages of a prototype IC incorporating two gallium arsenate transistors.
Band 6: Features two machines which are contenders for production of advanced electronic devices: MOCVD - metal organic chemical vapour deposition, and MBE - molecular beam epitaxy.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
