Major Barbara: The Pattern and Central Themes of the Play (2 Parts)

Synopsis
1: Noting the influence of the literary interests and family background of Gilbert Murray on this play, Professor Harold Brooks examines the themes of material and spiritual power and the influence of these themes on the structure of the play, its humour, dramatic situations and the character groupings.
: Professor Brooks concentrates on the triangle of characters: Barbara, Cusins and Undershaft. He examines the attitudes of these three characters to spiritual and material power in turn, underlining the complex permutations of their beliefs, and pointing out the development and progression of Undershaft’s philosophy as seen in the conversion of Barbara and Cusins.
