Mahabharata, The
- Synopsis
- Peter Brook’s adaptation of the classic Hindu epic story, which could be translated as ‘the great history of mankind’, the longest poem in history, a saga of fighting battles and finding peace, of good and evil, involving demi-gods and princes, devils and monsters. The drama revolves around the enmity between two wings of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, leading to a war that threatens to destroy mankind. The storyteller Vyasa begins by recounting to a young boy the origins of his ancestors, the Bharatas, the family that founded India and also a symbol of humanity. The leader of the Pandava brothers, Yudhishthira, gambles away his kingdom and the liberty of his family in a game of dice. The Pandavas are condemned to 12 years’ exile in the forest by the victorious Kauravas. At the end of this period, war between the two families of cousins seems inevitable.... Based on the RST/CICT stage production.
