Lucy Rowbotham: Optical Engineer

Synopsis
Looks at the work of a young engineer involved in an interdisciplinary approach to design. Lucy Rowbotham works as part of a team of designers with a contract design and development company and the video concentrates on her contribution to a project on how to measure the performance of a rail fastening, the key component which ensures railway track stability. Demonstrates how proposing a solution, in this case fibre optics, is only the start of the design process. It is then up to the designer to prove the theory bearing in mind the costs involved and the technical problems to be resolved. Shows how computer-aided design was used in producing the final optical sensor and the rigorous testing procedures undertaken involving both laboratory simulations and testing in a real environment.
