Lowry in Context
- Synopsis
- Few artists’ works are as familiar to the general public as are those of L S Lowry, and this critical acclaim and wide popularity are themselves an interesting phenomenon. Yet a closer examination reveals that the paintings and drawings are neither so familiar nor so simple as they may appear. This study brings together a wide variety of Lowry’s work from Salford Art Gallery and other collections, including portraits, industrial scenes, landscapes and seascapes, along with photographs of the scenes he painted. The text examines at his approach in the context of industrial decline in Lancashire and nostalgia for the past.
