Lower Para Aortic Lymph Node Sampling

Synopsis
It has become clear in recent years that a small but significant number of patients do not respond completely to radical pelvic treatment for carcinoma of the cervix, whether this is by surgery or radiotherapy. The problem of residual and recurrent disease rises significantly as the stage of the disease rises. It has been shown that the risk of positive para aortic nodes and stage 1b carcinoma of the cervix will be approximately 5%-10%, whereas in stage 3b it will rise to 30%-40%. This technique shows the ease with which the lowe para aortic lymph nodes can be sampled in order to provide valuable information which can be used to determine patients’ future treatment.
