Lovelies and Dowdies

Synopsis
'Lovelies and Dowdies’ is a surrealist play written by Stanislaw Witkiewicz shortly before his death in 1938. The film was built around a performance of his play at Edinburgh by the Polish experimental theatre group Cricot 2 under the direction of Tadeusz Kantor. Cricot 2 Theatre was formed in the 1930s by a group of surrealist and formist artists. It became a resistance cabaret during the occupation and after coming into the open again in 1945 was forced underground in 1948 by the Stalinist doctrine of Socialist Realism. It emerged with half acceptance in 1958 and was finally allowed to perform in the West in 1973 when the film was shot.
