Loss and Grief (2 Parts)

Synopsis
In a series of interviews people share their experiences of major personal loss.
1: A couple talk about the death of their young daughter from leukaemia; a woman describes her feelings following a mastectomy; two women talk about the deaths of their husbands; and two men explain what laryngectomy has meant for them. They talk about the reactions of professionals, families, friends and society as a whole. Professor Malcolm Brown then suggests guidelines for the helping person to give the best possible support.
2: Conceptualises the experiences of part 1. Colin Murray Parkes, an experienced grief counsellor, explains the most common pattern of grieving and adjustment to loss: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, resignation and acceptance. He talks about the help that different professionals can offer and how they can work together - social workers, nurses, doctors, and psychologists - to ease the difficulties clients face while keeping them in control of their own lives.
