Lorang’s Way

Synopsis: The Turkana are a group of semi-nomadic pastoralists who inhabit a harsh environment of dry thorn country in north-western Kenya. The film focuses upon a Turkana elder who serves not only as the subject of a portrait but also in many ways as a spokesman for the Turkana. Having spent time away from home in the army, Lorang has gained the insights of someone who has viewed his culture from the outside, becoming aware of the changes wrought by the modern world. Unlike those Turkana who believe that a way of life, which has so far been little affected by foreign penetration, colonial administrators and modern government officials, can continue in its present form, Lorang is aware of the vulnerability of this isolated pastoral existence.*
