- Synopsis
- Part 1: an overview of the duties imposed upon the local authority through the National Assistance Act 1948 and the Chronically Sick & Disabled Persons Act 1970 in order that the needs of disabled persons within their area can be met. Describes the practical benefits of such services in relation to the range of daily living activities which include domestic, personal, social and occupational pursuits.
Part 2: three types of disability and the effects on the lives of the individual and his/her family; the emotional shock of giving birth to a handicapped child and the effect on the immediate family; various areas of human development and the special needs of the handicapped schoolchild, adolescent and young adult; traumatic disability, i.e. disability in those who were formerly able-bodied; effects of sudden injury and subsequent rehabilitation on marital and family relationships, economic status and social competence; needs of people suffering from degenerative disorders as they differ from the suddenly disabled; implication of gradual loss and the pending relocation of home and lifestyle; promoting the independence of the client and his family.
