Living Sediments: Prelude to Palaeoecology

Synopsis
Introduces geology students to the kind of thinking required to set up an actualistic model for interpreting ancient environments. The theme is the need to study modern processes at all scales from the individual through the community to the complete ecosystem, and to consider the element of time, looking at both short, and long-term dynamics. The Solway Firth is the setting for the model. The film has three sections which deal in increasing scale with 1) individual adaptation for life in mud and sand; b) death, post-mortem effects and shell-bed formation; c) long-term accretion and preservation versus erosion and condensation.
