Living Plant Cell, The

Synopsis
Uses various microscopic techniques (bright-field microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, electron microscopy) on onion epidermis to emphasise the dynamic nature of plant cells. Looks at cell walls, plasma membranes, cytoplasm, vacuoles, the process of plasmolysis. Examines organelles (mitochondria and spherosomes) using fluorescence. Shows cytoplasmic streaming; describes the organisation of the cytoskeleton, nucleus, ER and plasmodesmata. Shows chloroplasts in ‘Nicotiana’ and amyloplasts in the potato, ‘living’ xylem and phloem, and the potential of microinjection techniques.
